What Happens During a Comprehensive Exam?

The dentist, along with the help of their dental assistant will work together to complete your comprehensive exam. It typically involves a series of steps to evaluate the overall condition of your teeth, gums, mouth, and surrounding structures. Here is what to expect :

  •  Medical History Review: Your dentist will start by reviewing your medical history, including, existing and occasionally past health conditions, and medications. This is a vital part of the appointment allowing the dentist to understand how any health issue may affect your oral health or the planned treatment.
  • Discussion of Concerns: You’ll have the opportunity to discuss any specific concerns you have about your oral health.
  • X-rays: X-rays will be taken to reveal problems that are not visible to the eye, such as cavities between teeth, impacted teeth, and bone support surrounding your teeth.
  • Bite and Jaw examination: The dentist will check your bite and your jaw joint and muscles. Problems with your bite can lead to issues such as teeth grinding (bruxism) or Jaw pain (TMD).
  • Oral cancer screening: The dentist will look for signs of oral cancer. This is done by checking the soft tissues of your mouth and throat and examining your neck for any abnormalities. At All Seasons Dental Clinic, we use advanced technology to assist in oral cancer screening.
  • Tooth Examination: We look at all surfaces of your teeth, looking out for both short-term and long-term problems.
  • Gum Health Assessment: A probe is gently used to examine the pockets between your teeth and gums to identify signs of gum/periodontal disease.
  • Digital Scan: A digital scan will be taken using our cutting-edge iTero 3D scanner. This allows us to see your teeth on a screen and discuss important findings with you! These scans can also be used for record keeping – seeing how your teeth have changed over the years, or they may be used for treatments such as crowns and night guards.
  • Treatment Recommendations: Finally based on the findings, dentist near you will discuss any necessary treatments or interventions, explaining all possible options.
